Fandom Holiday Exchange - anyone interested?

Postby MmeBahorel » Fri Nov 12, 2010 11:25 pm

Because it's that time of year (and I really should have put this in process sooner):

I'm contemplating resurrecting The Frenchboys Secret Santa Project. It only actually happened one year, but it was fun, and everyone likes presents, right? You sign up, you ask for things, everyone makes/writes something and everyone gets something. Unlike Yuletide (for those of you who do Yuletide), you'd get credit straight away, no anon postings with author reveals later.

From the original exchange rules: "This is all about virtual, fannish gifts. Your wishlist can include fanfic, fanart (both hand done and photo manips), vids, LJ stuff (icons, custom layouts, mood icons, etc.) Be creative!"

Right now, I am just gauging interest. If there is a decent amount of interest, then I'll see about getting things set up for a drawing of names by 25 November. (also am considering pushing it a week to a New Year's deadline/reveal - please note if that would be preferred.)

I think it's a good idea, but at this very second I'm hesitant to jump in and volunteer. XD Tentative yes?

I'm interested. Though how could I participate in the reveal if I'm going to be out of town on January 1, and I won't be back till about the 3rd?

The way it worked last time was that if you would be out of town, you'd email your gift to the mod, who would post it on your behalf: "This is Aurelia's gift for Hannah" or whatever. And everything remains open for commenting forever, so you would see and receive your gift whenever you got back.

I'm thinking that this year, since a portion of people last time never got gifts, there should be a turn-in deadline in advance of the real deadline, wherein at least a note must be sent to the mod saying "I got it, it's under control, I'll post it myself on the deadline" or "here's my thing, post it when it's time", so that the mod can then nag people to complete their assignment or at least have time to produce drabbles or something to make sure that no one is left out. (It's part of how Yuletide works so well, is that things are due early so that if someone defaults, there is time to find a replacement so no one ends up left out.)

Hmmm...tentative yes. I miiight have stuff going on that would keep me from doing this but I'd be interested in writing fic or making icons or something.

Tentative yes--I'd love to participate, but I have a huge-ass paper/project/thing due four days before Christmas. So obviously I'm in favor of extending the deadline, maybe even a Twelve Days of Christmas thing where the reveals go up until Jan. 6.

I'm going to reiterate my LJ statement of support, and also note that I'd be willing to help mod, if such was necessary. (Is it obvious that I'm excited?) I think an extended deadline - maybe even a February deadline, when everyone's not quite as busy? - would be great if it helped more people participate. There are already so many holiday exchanges ...

Yes, we are doing this!!!! Your friendly moderator this year is Mme Bahorel.

Calendar:

Signups: 18 November 2010 through 7 pm EST 26 November 2010
Assignments: Will be drawn the evening of 26 November 2010 and emailed to all participants
Deadline: Initial draft/mod communication by 28 December 2010 (If you must drop out, you must let the mod know by this date so that everyone can still get a present!)
Reveal: Rolling postings from 1 January 2011 to 7 January 2011 (7 January is Christmas under the Julian calendar used by Eastern Orthodox churches, so it's still totally a Christmas exchange – it also gives you a whole week of leeway for holiday travel.)

You do not need to have an account on LiveJournal to participate – please submit your gift to the moderator to post if you do not have a LiveJournal account. All gifts will be posted as individual posts on the santafrenchboys community.

How do signups work?

A signup requires five things:

1) Your username (particularly important if you are not a LiveJournal member or if your LJ name is different to your Abaissé name)
2) Your email address
3) Requests: You should request at least three (3) characters. Grouped characters are allowed and considered multiples: Any Student, Patron Minette, 1817 Crew, etc. You will be paired with someone who can offer at least one of your selected characters. If your only characters are Sister Simplice, Fauchelevent, and Louison, the mod may come back to you and say “can we discuss this?”
4) Optional details: Optional details are optional. If you want specific pairings, ask for them here. If you want porn, ask for it here. If you want gen, ask for it here. Suggest particular situations, let your recipient know your rating limits (this is not a porn challenge specifically, but I know this fandom *g*), say “When I said Enjolras, I totally meant I need David Thaxton icons for my LJ”. You are guaranteed something focused around at least one of your selected characters. Specific requests should be taken into account, but if someone wants a Frenchboy orgy, and you're just not feeling it, you don't have to write it. Please keep this in mind when making your character requests and filling in your optional details.
5) Offers: You should offer any characters you are willing to create something based around. If you say “I'll do anything”, that means you are willing to write a fic or create a drawing for the unnamed little convent school girl talking about virgins. You may make as many character offers as you like, and yes, “I'll do anything” is a perfectly valid offer if you're a gambler.

Post your signup to the signup thread, which will go up later tonight. The signup thread is confidential – only the mod will see all signups, and you will only receive a copy of your designated recipient's request.

What are appropriate gifts?

Gifts can be anything free and fannish that adheres to at least one requested character: fic, drawings, cartoons, LJ icons, photocollages, fanvids – anything that trips your fancy and is reasonably legal and original (and digital, since we are all about pixels on a screen). This is not a venue for gifting bootlegs. There is no requirement for length if you are writing fic. You are also not limited to using only one requested character if you have ideas for more.

All requests will go out to the same pool. If you desperately want a drawing of something, you can put that in your optional details, but I will not differentiate between writers and artists in making assignments. Please keep this in mind when making your requests. Assignments will be as close to a random draw as is possible, taking into account requested characters.

Once you have your assignment, have at it! Something in the requested characters and/or optional details ought to catch your fancy.

Because the reveal is not automated, and because last time a lot of people did not get any gifts at all (*sadness*), I'm instituting a requirement for you to get nagged by a moderator. I want to hear from you by a couple days after Christmas that everything is at the very least under control. You don't have to be done, but I need to know by then if you think you won't be done by 7 January. I will email you myself on 29 December if I have not at least heard “I've got it under control”. If I do not hear from you by 31 December, I will assume that you are unable to complete your assignment and will reassign it. I completely understand that holiday travel can mean that some of you are away from your computers from before Christmas until after New Year's, therefore the extended deadline and reveal period. Let me know this in advance so I do not nag you unnecessarily. If you finish early and would like to act as a replacement if givers drop out, let me know that, too.

How do I get my present?

Please join the santafrenchboys community if you are on LiveJournal! Gifts should be posted beginning 1 January 2011. I'll post a notice on Abaissé as well that reveals have begun.

You may post your gift to the community yourself. Please put “Gift for [recipient]” in the post title. Large images and lengthy fic should go under an LJ cut. If you do not have a LiveJournal account, email your gift/link to your gift to the moderator, who can post it on your behalf. If you will be unable to post your gift because you will be out of town, please send it to the moderator for posting – please do not post gifts early. Remember, you have a full seven days in which to post your gift.

When gifts are posted, read, watch, comment, squee! It is Christmastime, and Christmas is fun!

Please feel free to pimp this out to anyone (and any LJ or DA comms) that might be interested.

Signup post will go up on santafrenchboys on LiveJournal (with a link here) after I finally eat dinner *g*

Yay! I... think I am going to give this a try. :D I usually don't join these because I, er, usually cannot write fic for a prompt but, well, if I have a range of options maybe I can wangle something. :)

Because I'm a complete LJ idiot...

When you say "sign up at the santafrenchboys thing on LJ", do you mean just filling up the five requirements thing you listed in the instructions post above? Or is there something else I have to do, like watch that thread (not that I know how...), or add that group to my watchlist or something? Sorry, just clarifying.

No worries :)

Go to that link to that particular entry and fill in your five things as a comment on that entry. That's your actual sign-up for the exchange. Then, go to the profile page for the community (or mouseover the little comm icon) and join the community in order to get posting access as well as watch. If you just watch the comm, you'll see everything that gets posted, but you won't be able to post your gift.

Make sense?
