Postby Acaila » Mon Feb 01, 2016 11:00 pm

Some exciting news, there may be a new tv version of the Brick coming!

(Also this Davies guy has the same name as the captain of my fave football team. I choose to see this as a good omen)

Doubt it, looks like his work is predominantly UK-made.

Ah, Andrew Davies! I mainly know him for writing/masterminding BBC's House of Cards series in the '90s, and then producing the current US/Netflix version. And he also wrote a modernised BBC adaptation of Othello that I quite liked. Wonder if his LM will be set in the original period, or modern-day?

And wait, what's this now about Paul Dano? :?

Paul Dano plays Pierre in the new BBC War and Peace adaptation Andrew Davies has done. He's a bit crap to be honest.

His acting isn't crap, his face is.

And I mean this in the least offensive way possible. It's like casting a good actor, let's say Gary Oldman. In a role perfectly ill-suited to their general appearance. Let's say Gavroche. Paul Dano as Pierre is like Gary Oldman as Gavroche. I'm sure he could put in an interesting and fleshed out performance, but why?

Ah. Yeah, I totally get being put off by his appearance in certain roles. (Or even in general; when the news came out about that guy who bought the rights to a lifesaving AIDS medicine and raised the price exponentially just because he could, my first thought was that he looked like a younger Paul Dano. :? )

Yeah, there's a role for Dano alright! lolol.

He's not a bad actor. I just have trouble seeing the acting past what I feel is an inappropriate face-cast to a character I really like. Evidently not everyone feels the same way.

The overall point here is that Dano is in the BBC War and Peace, which was written by this individual allegedly writing a new and probably BBC Les Misérables.

I imagine because they ended up doing War and Peace instead, which has been receiving excellent reviews and a lot of praise. Which would explain why Davies is veering back towards Les Mis.

I was just coming in to post the coverage I'd seen :D
Six parts large enough to do justice to Les Amis I wonder....

Did it say how long each episode is? My guess would be an hour like most other BBC dramas? Certainly more room than any movie adaptation, how they use this time is another matter.

I've heard good things about the director, but the first time this series was flagged as a possibly he took a not-so-subtle shot at the musical adaptation, which was just felt so unnecessary. It sort of soured my enthusiasm a little.

I'm guessing it'll be 6x60 minutes like War and Peace. He did seem a bit more conciliatory with the musical in the Guardian coverage I saw at least.
