Let's start with the basics. My version of Les Misérables will be a 12-hour+ BBC production, very high production values, all UK actors (I always picture the characters with English accents, a la the musical), and will cover just about every bit of the plot, excluding Waterloo, the sewers, and possibly the big background story of the Bishop. Other than that, it will be fully intact.
My cast will be:
Jean Valjean: Russell Crowe.
I know Russell Crowe isn't British, but he can pull the accent off perfectly. And can't you just see him bending down to pick up Cosette's bucket in the wood?http://www.redcarpetcrash.com/wp-conten ... ussell.jpg
Javert: Richard Armitage
. I know, I know, RA is way too good looking for Javert. But he has the intensity and dark broodiness to pull it off, I think.http://robinhood.edogo.com/wp-content/u ... itage4.jpg
Fantine: Romola Garai.
She's delicately pretty and innocent-looking, has sad, troubled eyes, and is a good actress.http://www.indielondon.co.uk/img/capture_castle1.gif
Marius: Ioan Gruffudd.
See the picture below, and you'll understand what I mean. That sort of standoffish air, mixed with stunning good looks...http://images.fanpop.com/images/image_u ... 00_826.jpg
Cosette: As a grown up, Gemma Arterton.
She's classically beautiful and has a heartbreakingly innocent air. She made a lovely Tess (of the D'Urbervilles), and I think she could pull Cosette off.http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http ... =113&ty=31
Enjolras: Here's where the fun begins.
After much deliberation, I chose Andrew Buchan
as my Enjolras. He looks like an avenging angel, and is a brilliant actor. He never goes for the easy way out in playing his characters - he's not afraid to make them unlikeable, and he plays the restrained but passionate young man so well.http://pics.livejournal.com/joyful_molly/pic/001cf4q4
Éponine: Now, she I had some real trouble with. I think Emma Watson
, of Harry Potter fame, might just be able to do it. But, then again, Éponine's such a physically and emotionally and mentally damaged girl, I don't know if Emma could be made ugly and desperate-looking enough to play her. Still, she's my only idea for the role.http://lovelyemmawatson.com/UserFiles/2 ... %20Far.jpg
The Bishop: Derek Jacobi
. Because Derek Jacobi's one of my favourite actors, and he would make a perfect Bishop.http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_nNA6c8fIvIM/S ... 96872a.jpg
Combeferre: Alright, he isn't strictly a major character, but I thought Paul Bettany
would make a perfect Combeferre. If only he was a good 10 or 15 years younger....http://www.sconefest.com/john/blog/favo ... ettany.jpg
Mabeuf: Stephen Fry
. Because he is Stephen Fry. I have a suspicious feeling Mabeuf wouldn't be too much of a stretch for him to play.http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/4 ... tv_203.jpg
The Thenardiers: For old times sake, Monsieur Thenardier will be played by Alun Armstrong
. Madame will be played by Claudie Blakeley.http://www.candlefordchronicle.com/uplo ... 69.jpg?570http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/cop ... lg_dan.jpg
Gavroche: Angus Imrie
. He's perfect in every way as Gavroche.http://st.kinopoisk.ru/images/sm_actor/1532136.jpg
Hmm...any one else I'm missing? Tell me what you think of my cast....
