Anime?

Postby Mademoiselle Lanoire » Tue Jan 23, 2007 12:29 am

Has anyone seen any full episodes of the new anime series? If so, what do you think of it so far?

My buddy saw it, and I managed to see some clips. Well, from what I know, it's certainly an interesting, slightly more light-hearted take on a serious story.

I know the anime expands a LOT on the dynamics with Cosette and the Thenardier family, especially Cosette and Gavroche. It sounds cute, but I'm not sure if it's quite 'there' in picturing the situation that Cosette found herself in. Valjean hasn't made much of an appearance yet, so wah.

Blech. Now that I've seen two episodes, I think the best that I can say is that they cast some of the actors well. There is so, so much wrong with this series; above all the fact that it's aimed towards kids.

I heard about this. I didn't think that they'd spend much time with the Thenardiers, since it's aimed at children. I'd more imagined that Valjean would rescue her in episode one and then she'd be at the convent looking at bugs and suff. Oh well.

green eyes...yikes.

Was Cosette supposed to be blonde in any other depiction of her?

I've seen all the episodes available (meaning up to ep. 9) and...well, the whole anime is a really weird mix between being a toned-down kids' show and being full of really geeky book details. For example, Fantine never turns to prostitution and there is this random kid called Alan thrown in to serve as a way of showing Madeleine's/Valjean's backstory, seeing as the series start from the point when Fantine leaves Cosette with the Thenardiers. On the other hand, you get scenes like one where you can clearly see Thenardier painting the sign for his inn - the sign says "Au Sargent de Waterloo" and depicts Thenardier dragging an obviously wounded man (Pontmercy Sr., one can only hope) over a battlefield. Then there's a very cool Sister Simplice and the cart scene and Fauchelevent get one heck of a good book!canon treatment.

Overall, not that bad. Though, true, some of the character designs are funny (Valjean's mustache gets me every time, har har).

I've got, er, caps, if anyone wants...

Caps would be wonderful. I haven't seen much, since I'm waiting for episodes to be subbed.

I've been asking my friend to translate stuff for me. So far, our verdict is that it's pretty okay, even if some parts of the story had to be revised. What I wonder though is how much of Marius' story and the barricade will be worked in, if the series focuses on Cosette.
