Les Mis manga by Takahiro Arai

Postby 23623 » Sun Feb 05, 2017 8:38 am

A million thanks to the wonderful Olivia_y who told me about this thing. And I'm SO SORRY, Olivia, this should have been your post, not mine, but I can't help...I just think it deserves a thread of its own.

So basically, this is a manga adaption of Les Mis by Japanese artist Takahiro Arai and, according to Olivia, very faithful to the brick. (Apologies, Olivia, this introduction totally sucks... it will be better if they can hear it from you... *pokes pokes*) I had been looking for a complete English translation but just read from the blog (link below) that unfortunately such thing doesn't exist yet. Some fans have translated parts of the manga though. You can read it here:

http://bobcatmoran.tumblr.com/post/7910 ... aster-post

Again, thanks Olivia for the link!

I'm reading at a very slow pace. Don't understand Japanese so I have to scroll down for translations and back for the drawing. Maybe I'll post some reviews here as I go...but I have to make sure I won't get lost first, lol.

Haha, after you messaged me I actually thought about starting such a thread (but just too lazy lol)!

For anyone looking to read/buy the manga: MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT ONE! There are a number of versions out there and most are heavily abridged (like into one volume), with very stereotypical anime-style illustrations (think Shojo Cosette). This one is 8 volumes long, the artist's name in Kanji is 新井隆広 (he has a twitter where he's posted in-progress drawings: @pyonpyon6).

If you know the Brick (and the story in general) well enough, I don't think the language barrier is all that much of an issue, since the context will tell you a lot, and the characters designs make them fairly identifiable.

Here's an example of the cover (volume 1). (Despite what the back cover shows, characters like Enjolras and Éponine don't get introduced until much later).

I initially thought this was an English translation but it's actually in French, so...closer to English than Japanese I guess?

There's also a Chinese scanlation of volume 1 (which covers Valjean's story up til his release from prison):

(Worth a look even if you can't read Chinese, the scans are ultra-HD)

Thank you very much, Olivia! Glad to know that there's a French translation. Reading French is actually much easier than reading Japanese for me. Though Chinese (my native language) and Japanese have much in common, reading Japanese as if it were Chinese really won't work, and I can't even use google translate as I don't know how to type Japanese.

Speaking of character design, I really can't accept this Valjean. He looks SO WEIRD. But I love the girls in this. Éponine is my favorite so far. That picture with her and Gavroche leaning against the wall and Marius and Cosette in the garden behind them is amazing! Cosette and Fantine are good too. Javert...not sure how to describe him. Kinda creepy but suicide looks good (yes, I jumped to that scene, lol). Gillenormand makes me    while I like Mabeuf a lot. Enjolras and Grantaire actually remind me of Cosette and Valjean. And Montparnasse totally surprises me, in a good way.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha someone help me I'm dying this is so funny  For those who don't understand Chinese, let me tell you what's going on: this site lists "adventure" and "fantasy" as its genre, and the plot summary simply says "the bloodshed brought by a loaf of bread". OMG.

Quick guide: click the red rectangular button next to the picture to start reading; to turn to the next page, move your mouse to the right hand side of the picture and click (anywhere will work, just make sure it's on the right hand side); to turn back, do a click at the left hand side of the page.

Haha, I'll have to disagree with you there because I love both these designs (even they look nothing like the usual getup for the musical)! I couldn't really identify where his influences would be from though (apart from Enjolras, whose costume resembles that of the 2012 film, and possibly Éponine).

The Suicide was so beautifully done with the animal imagery and his visions of both himself and Valjean through the years. And letting down his hair...so much grace despite the turmoil. I also love that it depicted him falling backwards (rather than forwards like the 2012 movie, or straight down as they do in London), not that it makes a difference to the end result but the aesthetic is gorgeous.

Oh gee, I didn't even read the 'adventure/fantasy' tag  , and it's not even a 'loaf' but a 'piece' of bread - so not worth it Valjean! Sometimes I wonder if all the misconceptions about Les Mis come from the various attempts to summarise the plot. Like people who say 'can't believe he was in jail for 19 years just for stealing bread!' and you're like '...it wasn't just for the bread...'. Heck, even in the musical they addressed this issue in the prologue!

You're the best, Olivia! <3

Some pictures from the tumblr I linked.

Javert. I love him in this one! And yes Suicide is SO BEAUTIFULLY DONE. Everyone please go to the tumblr and read it. Also someone should totally show this to the director of the BBC series and tell him to do Suicide in this way. :D

Said amazing picture with Éponine, Gavroche, Marius and Cosette. It's the full version of vol.6 cover. I love this picture so much. :D
http://68.media.tumblr.com/665b829f1062 ... 2_1280.jpg

Montparnasse and Gavorche.

Mme Thenardier. No idea what she's talking about but the picture is good.
http://68.media.tumblr.com/544485bdff8e ... o1_500.jpg

Enjolras and Grantaire. It's this picture that makes me think of...Cosette and Valjean. Probably because Enjolras and Cosette look so alike in the manga and my headcanon Valjean is always a large, dark-haired, not-so-good-looking man (who doesn't drink, though)...
http://68.media.tumblr.com/cee8165218ed ... o2_500.jpg

Gavroche
http://68.media.tumblr.com/bfc47c14aea5 ... o1_500.jpg

Little Cosette
http://68.media.tumblr.com/89664029e7cf ... tp_500.jpg

Valjean, little Cosette, little Marius (!!!) and the Gillenormands (!!!!!!!!!!!) Full version of vol. 4 cover. I know it never happens in the brick but it's too good to not share. Little Cosette and little Marius are so cute. And the Gillenormands, oh man, I love the Gillenormand Family Drama! :D
But Valjean's hair and face still look awful. :x (Sorry, Olivia!)
http://68.media.tumblr.com/e96f95e1943d ... o1_500.jpg

Young Fantine. Again no idea what she's saying but the picture is beautiful.
I can't be the only one who thinks Cosette, Fantine and Enjolras look the same...right?

How do you upload attachments btw?

It's a pity the stage production can't simulate the hair flying in the wind  Oh now I really hope they give Javert long hair in the series (even though I know there are people who are vehemently against pony tails  )

She's saying 'Fantine'. I guess this is the scene where someone gives her that name?
I'm pretty sure Cosette and Fantine are designed to look similar on purpose. I don't think Enjolras looks similar to them...actually I don't think he even looks that feminine...(less so than Marius!).

More Les Mis comic books

Postby 23623 » Sat Mar 11, 2017 10:07 am

@Olivia: HIGH FIVE I LOVE LONG-HAIRED JAVERTS! :D
Fantine saying her name...aww I love the mental image of someone giving her the name and she being like "oh, so I'm Fantine now? Fantine, Fantine, how does the name sound?" <3 <3
I think Marius looks fine in Arai's manga but I still have the impression that Valjean, Javert (when he's alive) and Enjolras are a bit strage.

Shamelessly permit myself to go off-topic in my own thread. Just found some other Les Mis comic books.

http://www.freecomicbookday.com/Catalog/JAN140053
Another Japanese manga but it's in English! And there's another very typical Japanese-style Fantine. Cosette is blond too. Is there any Les Mis manga where Fantine doesn't look like this and Cosette isn't blond? I prefer this JVJ to Arai's though, to be honest. Boring old school aesthetics, I know. Sorry.
The "?" in Cosette's speech bubble when Fantine kisses her goodbye somehow makes this scene funnier than it should be. :?

http://lemiotax.tumblr.com/post/8432013 ... supplement
So apparently the Japanese have been drawing Les Mis manga since the 50s, dear lord!
Don't understand a word but the captions say this is mainly Javert's suicide. I'm glad that Javert's resignation is also included. Also it's interesting that the caption of the last page reads "Valjean mourns the death of Javert". Is there any Japanese speaker who can help with translations? What exactly does Valjean say?
...and Cosette is still blond, lol, this tradition is older than I think! *facepalm*

This is an American comic book for children I guess. Super simplified plot but the drawing looks good.

Ah I've seen that in a bookstore! It's actually one of the ones I'm thinking of when I was saying 'MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT ONE!', because it's actually kind of terrible. I'm /almost/ certain that comic is actually only in English, but they just used a very typical anime-type of drawing style. Basically it's only one volume so the story is heavily abridged and so unsatisfying.

Have you seen the Chinese graphic novel from the early 80s?

Don't mess with Texas! We mess up enough by ourselves.
I have actually made bullets like they're doing in my avatar. Then loaded the gun with a ramrod, and shot it. But I'm not feeling real good about guns right now.
