Ach, sorry to leave this, Aurelia. :(

Something I had forgotten about Gavroche until reading this again here:
a little boy eleven or twelve years of age, who would have realized with tolerable accuracy that ideal of the gamin sketched out above, if, with the laugh of his age on his lips, he had not had a heart absolutely sombre and empty.

So, yeah, a carefree little kid he may be, but care free. Kind of desensitized, actually, is how I'm interpreting that. Which, actually, might be kind of good for his situation, but is still sad.

I now do wonder where Hugo romanticized Gavroche's plight a little too much, but yes, your interpretation of 'care free' works too!
