Yeh, yeah it would be better. This kind of makes me wonder if Myriel ever had to adopt anyone after Valjean left.

I kind of wonder what Valjean did shoot at. My guess is larger things, like deer, if anything, but it doesn't really specify whether he's shooting for meat or at targets or anything (though I still guess meat because of bullets).

He performed a multitude of good actions, concealing his agency in them as a man conceals himself because of evil actions. He penetrated houses privately, at night; he ascended staircases furtively. A poor wretch on returning to his attic would find that his door had been opened, sometimes even forced, during his absence. The poor man made a clamor over it: some malefactor had been there! He entered, and the first thing he beheld was a piece of gold lying forgotten on some piece of furniture. The "malefactor" who had been there was Father Madeleine.

Madeleine is Santa! Seriously, though, I kind of love how he's doing good, but still being talked about as if he were a thief. It's sad, though, in a way; it could be a comment as to how he does all of this good, but still is seen as he was before. Maybe. Sort of.

Or just the general distrust people have for anyone unusual?

The supreme happiness of life consists in the conviction that one is loved; loved for one's own sake--let us say rather, loved in spite of one's self; this conviction the blind man possesses.

First off, I kind of love how, in rambling about Myriel, Hugo isn't talking about just Myriel. Actually, when I saw this quote out of context, I thought it was from Marius' little journal he gives to Cosette. So woo, universality! (Though, yeah, with the earlier conversation; the whole Saintly Cripple/Saintly Woman thing is just weird.)

Ooh boy. Well, the one thing that I noticed in his description that people seem to ignore, is here: "Certain police officers have a special physiognomy made complex by the blend of apparent meanness with apparent authority. Javert had such a physiognomy, minus the meanness."

Some of that could be Rose taking things into her own hands again, but the point is, he isn't in his job because he likes to boss people around. He's cold, yes, but he won't arrest someone without due cause or anything like that (Also, I like the apparent authority. He could be such a mess on the inside, but he still carries himself with authority anyway.).

And the comparison of Javert as a wolf makes it seem so apt to imagine him both as the 'lone wolf' he is psychologically, as well as part of the larger body that is the Prefecture.

Yep. If his "pack" is the Prefecture, though, he's not entirely welcomed, is he.

(We totally need a werewolf!Javert thread to go with Vamparius)

Someone write it!!

Javert is definitely more of a rogue wolf in the sense that his loyalty will never be to 'others' or a 'pack' but to something else.
