Unanswered Questions

Hi all! For another pseudo-serious discussion on the Brick, I have a question:

What do you think of the 'loose ends' in Victor Hugo's book? Is there a question in the book you always wanted answered, but never got an answer in the text? What do you think happened to the characters/situations that went on past Valjean's death in the novel?

I've heard, and I agree, that one of the loose ends that Hugo purposely leaves undone, the case of Gavroche's babies.

Montparnasse is another interesting loose end.

Montparnasse is another interesting loose end.

Seriously. For such an intriguing character, he really doesn't get enough mention. Ditto with Babet.

This thread has given me a plot-bunny. I might write the weirdest fic ever now, starring the lovely Montparnasse. Should I, or should I leave the writing to people who are actually good at it?

Go on and write it! :D :D

Hmmm, other loose ends character-wise: Azelma, the rest of Valjean's fellow convicts, Magnon...seems as if the more unscrupulous characters are the ones who have a tendency to 'fade to black'

And the rest of Valjean's family. We only hear his sister moved to Paris with one boy, but what happened to the others?

Well, yeah, but what does striking off on their own encompass? There's a million possibities.

Hmmm....going to Paris earlier? Getting jobs earlier? Whatever it takes to leave home in hopes of doing something perhaps about their awful situation?

Darn, that IS a sad story.

Just bumping this thread up.

Another loose end: what happened to Fantine and Tholomyes' friends?

What intrigues me more (well, maybe "intrigue" is the wrong word, but still): Valjean apparently has a brother, but this brother is only ever mentioned once (in the dream he has before he leaves for Arras), if I remember that correctly. How old is that brother, and, well, what becomes of him later on?

Hmm - I didn't notice that. But if the only mention of this "brother" is in a dream, are we automatically to assume he's real?

Well, Valjean says about him only that he rarely thinks of him and can hardly remember him, something like that, so I assume he is a real person.
