I hope this political song comparison doesn't step on anyone's toes here but whenever I hear the song " I Am America" by Krista Branch I think of Enjolras. Some are probably thinking what in the world does a song about 21st century America have to with a fictional character from an 19th century novel but the song is about the government stepping on the rights of the individual and not listening to the cries of the people. Some of the lyrics include lines like:
"Pay no attention to the people in the street crying out for accountability."
"Pretend you're kings and sit on your thone. Look down your nose at the peasants below."
Some of the things Enjolras and the friends were fighting for we were the rights of the individual over the rights of the government ( the king).
Interpret the political leanings of the Friends anyway you like but I'd like to think that if Enjolras came to life and found himself in 21st century America he'd be leading the Tea Party movement. At least that's how I see it
" He makes no vain sacrifice who fights for a cause. All here are ready to die so that our brothers may live as free men. Liberty... sweet liberty... come fight with those who defend you." ----Enjolras.
