Probably the human weaknesses - instead of mere evil - make me sympathize with characters. Also, I think Fosca is a sort of tragic figure- a romantic who has not everything right in upstairs. As someone who has been in mental hospital because of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder I have soft spot to mentallly unstable characters.
This is not meant to excuse Passion characters and their behavior, of course.

South Carolina's state song makes me think of Enjolras...

ImageTime Machine Theory:According to some people, Hugo had a time machine and based Enjolras on this user but made a male version of this user.

Err, wasn't that a rallying song for the Confederacy? Considering how the French revolutionaries abolished slavery and all (thanks for nothing, Napoleon!), I don't see that working at all. I mean it's about courage and devotion to a cause, but not all causes are created equal.
Here day embraces night, and says: I will die with you and you will be reborn with me. From the heavy embrace of all desolations springs faith.

The real name of devotion is disinterestedness.

Apologies if I'm wrong about the Confederate connection, but that does seem to be what the author, Timrod, is best known for.

Not a character, but if ever there was a filler scene in 'Les Misérables' in which Éponine would work up the courage to tell Marius how she felt about him, and he politely turns her down, the song 'When There Was Me and You' (from High school Musical), would be so apt. Especially the lyrics, "Why did I let myself believe, miracles could happen?" " 'Cos I liked the view, thought you felt it too...and there was me and you".

Drunken Lament by Ludo on their album You're Awful I Love is probably my favorite Grantaire-esque song to date. http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/ludo/drunkenlament.html

The song Me, You and My Medication by Boys like Girls would be very Grantaireish if he experimented with painkillers as well as alcohol, which I could honestly see him having done at one point.

Why Do I Go To Extremes - Billy Joel
Just think about Bahorel trying to explain it to a mistress.

I was reminded of a rather moderized Les Amis when I heard Our Last Summer. I understood the song as being one rather of the loss of youth and happy days in Paris that are long gone.

I Remember the Sky is appropriate for Éponine, I think, for when I first heard it I remembered Éponine recalling how happy she was when walking with Marius on the boulevard-"How the birds sang... and I wasn't cold...." before she died.

Combeferre's song would be Mama, Look Sharp from 1776, with the only exception really being that the Les Amis did not turn to run.
"They heard a manly voice cry out: 'Vive la France! Long Live the Future!'
There was a flash and an explosion."

I thought about this as soon as I finished singing this song for the first time, and that was only earlier today. I think Courfeyrac is very well represented by "It's De-Lovely"

That is a very good Courfeyrac song! :) Makes me grin just thinking about it!

Why Must We Tell Them Why from the off-Broadway musical 35MM makes me think of Courfeyrac too.

"Sail Me Away" from Lestat is for Enjolras. I think that before the morning dawns he realizes just what the future is going to cost all of them. Bahorel and Jehan are dead, Paris isn't coming to their aid, and the rest of his friends are doomed to die. He is weary and longing for his Utopia.

I made an entire E/R playlist, just for the sake of the feels.

Other songs that didn't make it on there:
- "Seize the Day" and "The World Will Know" from the Broadway soundtrack to Newsies for les Amis
- "Hero" by Superchic[k]; it feels very modern AU (especially with a rap/rock breakdown that screams Enjolras)
- "Youth Without Youth" by Metric for Gavroche
- "Once and for All" by Disciple - this song screams JVJ, it's a little insane
- "Mr. Pushover" by Hey Monday - it just feels like Javert to me
At the heart of every revolution there's a dream deferred.

This song could really fit any of the Barricade Boys.
