QUESTION on canon - please help ASAP

Postby Madame le Fantome » Wed Dec 22, 2010 2:52 am

Hey, guys! I'm not entirely sure if this is the right place to be posting this, but I'm hoping it is...

So I haven't finished reading the Brick yet--I'm working on it, but still stuck in Waterloo, and I keep having library books that I need to finish first, etc.--and I need to know as much about canon physical descriptions of the Amis as possible. While it's very true that I could go through the Brick and/or try to finish it first, or try to search the internet, I don't have time; I'm asking so I can draw them as accurately as possible, and I'm drawing them for a Xmas card...so...yeah...

Anyway...basically, like I said, as much info. about canon physical descriptions of the Amis as you can give, especially hair/eye colors. It'd also be great if you could give me an idea of where in the book the description is; for example, I'm pretty sure that Enjolras being blond is canon, but where does it actually say that?

Thanks, guys! Sorry about having left you so little time to answer!

Descriptions are in Part III, Book 4, Chapter 1. Enjolras is blond, Lesgle is bald, and that's about it. Everyone has different versions of them because we aren't given physical descriptions. There's debate over what Jean Prouvaire "dressed badly" means. We get far more description of their personalities than we do of their appearances.

The Amis are to be found from Marius Book 4: The Friends of the ABC (pg 646 of the Fahnestock McAfee) to Jean Valjean Book One: Orestes Fasting, Pylades Drunk (pg 1253).

Enjolras:
-angelically beautiful
-austere face, deep eyes with slightly red lids, thick underlip (readily disdainful), high forehead; fair lashes, blue eyes, rosy cheeks, exquisite teeth; pale
-tall, slender, blond (Navet mentioned Enjolras as "a big fellow with blond hair"; elsewhere in the book it is mentioned that he had "fair hair")

There's very little physical description (if any!) on the rest of the Amis.

Combeferre:
-[not canon, but given that he was based on Desmoulins, I tend to think of him as the shortest of the lot]

Jean Prouvaire:
- dressed badly, usually kept his head and eyes down, prone to blushing

Feuilly:
?

Courfeyrac:
-youthfully animated
-Hugo said that Courfeyrac "had all the qualities of a centre - roundness and radiance". I choose to take it literally to mean that he was chubby!

Bahorel:
-wore loud waistcoats. He wore a red one to Lamarque's funeral and the insurrection
-nothing mentioned about his build, but it's unlikely he would've been willowy if he liked fighting all that much!

Lesgle/Bossuet:
-cheery, bald (I don't know if Hugo simply meant that he had nothing, or if he was literally missing hair; many people take it to mean the latter)
-wore threadbare coats

Joly:
-carried a cane, was forever rubbing his nose with it

Grantaire:
-his build is not specifically mentioned, but this guy knew boxing, tennis, dances and was a "knowledgeable cudgel player", so he was probably in decent shape
-often drunk
-very ugly

Thanks much for all the help! It makes it so much easier knowing what is canon--and, therefore, required, by my standards if nothing else--and what I have freedom with! :D
