Meta: First Names

Postby JeanneProuvaire » Tue Oct 17, 2006 1:30 am

Lots of characters aren't given first names in the book, so we, as fic writers, have to insert our own. Mine are as follows:

Enjolras, Emile
Courfeyrac, Antoine
Combeferre, Nicolas
Joly, Christophe
Feuilly, Lucien
Grantaire, Maximilien
Bahorel, Armand
Laigle, Philippe
Javert, Auguste

So, if you really want to, share yours!

My Enjolras is always Michel or some variation thereof, and my Combeferre is usually Adrien. Courfeyrac is often François, but if I'm feeling evil to my figment or historically in-jokey, he gets stuck with Godefroy. The rest of them tend to shift around a bit.

If I ever write satirical fic, I have decided that my Enjolras will be called Uriel for the duration of the fic. What with all the scads of Michels, Gabriels, and Raphaels lurking about the fandom.

I have never written them in an actual story, but my Thénardiers are Gaspard and Mathilde. (Yes, I have plotbunnies concerning them. Be afraid.)

*cough* I'm going to state right here and right now that I'm extremely protective of my Enjolras. I have never yet seen an Enjolras with the name I've given him, and I'd like to keep it that way. (Read -- if any of y'all ever give yer Enjyfigment the same name as mine, I will call you on your unoriginality. XD)

Now then, on to The List:

Javert - Philippe
Enjolras - Aurelien
Combeferre - Julien
Courfeyrac René in L'Avenir; Valery everywhere else.
Joly - Marc
L'Aigle - Gregoire
Feuilly - Etienne in L'Avenir and some other places; Martin in others
Bahorel - Gilbert
Grantaire - Damien
and to this day, she's glided on
always home but so far away
like a word misplaced
nothing said, what a waste

Ah, MmeJavert, Aurelien is an amazing name for an Enjy! Who wouldn't want to taste all that dawn, anyway? :D

My guys don't have first names, as of yet. I assume if/when I ever write anything about them, I'll figure something out.

My only slight preference at the moment is some variation of Jean-something for Grantaire, as I can then call him Jeannot for short, and I adore that name.

Heh. :D I gave him that name before my mind connected the dots and realised it meant 'golden.' XD

Random tid-bit -- he's named after his great-uncle. Why yes, he does have an extensive family history. I had way too much time on my hands at that time...

Am I the only dork who can't STAND giving them first names? It makes me shudder. (not to offend any of you guys!!)

My Enjolras is going to stay Enjolras, and Javert is going to stay Javert, and if anyone hassles them about their long-lost first names, somebody's going to get a nightstick up their ass. And not in the smexy way, either.

I plan on using mine very occasionally... inner monologues, to get someone's attention, etc. But there they are.

Most of mine still don't have any first names yet, because I never write anything, but Enjolras occasionally gets called Louis-Antoine, because I’m easily amused like that.

So amused.

Enjolras, for some reason, will forever stay Julien in my mind -- think it was the subjection to a bunch of fics where he had that name early in my days of fandom. (No, not Wasp -- can you imagine reading THAT as your first LM fic? Dear me.)

Ahahaha. That wasn't my first, but it was among the first glut of LM fics I read when I first got into the fandom. Is probably part of why I'm so shamelessly pervy nowadays.

Let's compare this to our list (that is, the one Jean-le-Cric and I made)

Cédric Enjolras
Jean-Claude Courfeyrac
Nicolas Combeferre
Jerôme Feuilly
Eugène Bahorel
Gustave Lèsgles
Louis Joly
Philippe Grantaire

They haven't all been used yet, they occasionally turn up in dialogue, but since they call each other with their last names mainly it isn't too often.

Javert got his first name as well, but I'm not sure if Cric wants me to tell that to anyone yet. :D

Yes, and he even gets called Nic at times, just as Bahorel tends to call Enjolras Céd when he's trying to be cool. :D

Eugène is totally Cric's fault, I had him down on the list as plain Pierre at first.
