Casualty List

(Yes, I have been reading Mystères de Paris. *g* Sue had fun with argot too. Chouriné = stabbed, come down with a brain fever = get sentenced to death, meg des megs = god.)

Has anyone compiled a casualty list for Les Misérables? Victor does seem to go in for high death tolls, especially of characters readers love.

Did I leave any major or minor characters out? So, the body count is…20 dead by the end of the book. And I’m not counting people who show up just to drop dead, like Mere Innocent. Out of the major characters, only M. Thenardier, Azelma, Cosette, Marius and Gillenormand live.

(Uhm, who else has lines?)

The three gendarmes who arrest Valjean? :D Well, only one or two of them have text. Still:

Three gendarmes - FNM
(and the people in Arras and on the way are all FNM as well)

And Irma Boissy has a line. Irma Boissy - FNM
The Changer - FNM (lives and thrives, presumably)
Toussaint - FNM (lives, presumably)
Basque - lives
Nicolette - lives

Also, I think Mme Hucheloup, Matelote, Gibelotte all live? Or ... don't they? Louison lives/FNMs, certainly.
(Also, Musichetta and Bahorel's unnamed mistress and everybody else's 'more or less' mistresses - FNM.)

AND THE ONE-LEGGED VETERAN IN THE LUXEMBOURG. FNM. And ... hey, the owner of Courfeyrac's hotel actually has a line, doesn't he? FNM. And there are quite a few more criminals who are FNM. (Okay, this is getting silly.)

The nuns in the convent? Also, the bourgeois and his son are FNM. Whoops. (Ma Bougon wasn't mentioned yet, was she?)

The woman Fantine, uhm, interacts with in the beginning whose name I forget. (Or is that just a thing from a movie and I'm confusing my versions. Uhm.) Has she already been mentioned?

Either way, FNM. I think.

Don't we all, all the time? :D

... okay, there have got to be more. Um, lots of people die at Waterloo? And lots of Waterloo people die later? Ney is shot through the heart in the Jardin du Luxembourg (AND THAT IS TOTALLY WHY MARIUS FALLS IN LOVE THERE)?

Orang-utan who disappeared from the Jardin des Plantes in 1800 - dies; skeleton found in the sewers

The unnamed barricade men/boys who say one meaningful thing and then disappear forever because nobody knew their names - Died at barricade, most likely.

Okay, this is getting ridiculous.
