Rumours about cholera epidemic

Postby brixhamlaura » Mon Apr 01, 2013 6:31 pm

Re-reading the script for our theatre show on the bus (for the thousandth time) and unforgivably, I cant remember off the top of my head if the rumour mentioned that someone heard about the cholera epidemic in Paris that spring was caused by the government poisoning wells in the slum areas, came from the Les Mis novel, or from some historical research digging around somewhere? (my brain melted today with lots of rushing about). It isn't important, but it is one of those things that started bugging me, and I haven't the time to dig through all my research files... :(

Highly chuffed to be directing a (non-musical) stage show based on aforementioned brilliant Victor Hugo novel, in 2013 - http://southdevonplayers.weebly.com

I'm pretty certain that's an actual bit of historical information. I don't personally recall that ever being mentioned in Les Mis, though don't quote me on this without asking around a little more.

I'm pretty sure that it's mentioned somewhere in the brick.

I've just had a search through the Hapgood translation for any mention of cholera and can't find it in there, but I've definitely heard it. I seem to remember online commentary that Hugo missed a bit of an opportunity to talk about the cholera, so I think it's more likely to be historical information than the novel.

I was positive that I saw it somewhere and Hapgood is the only version that I've read. Maybe I read it somewhere else. Who knows.

Et voila!
I was sure I'd read it in something academic about the time and was about to go grab my copy of the Insurgent Barricade when I decided I was too lazy to move and could do some googling instead

Barricades was definitely where I remembered reading about it.
