Chess

Postby humanracer » Sat Jun 08, 2013 10:50 pm

As a bit of an 80s throwback I decided to check out some other 80's musicals and got hold of the 84 concept album of Chess. Wow!. I admit I love ABBA so thought this might be good and I was not disappointed. Before the album I only knew One Night in Bangkok (which is a bit of cheesefest let's face it) and I Knew Him So Wel but there are so many other great tracks on the album. Some of the music seems rather dated and has a big 80's feel to it but that makes it all the more appealing to me. Doubt I will ever see it on stage but I like creating the visuals in my head.

Oh I *adore* Chess. Some of the other versions are a little less 80s, but eh, I like that stuff. Dated is a criticism that gets levelled at it quite a bit, but aside from when they tried to keep updating it to make it relevant, I don't think it has dated too badly. And it's better when it is treated as a bit more of a period piece imo. The script has never yet come into a final version that everyone can get behind, but I love the potential of the show as much as the material itself.

I absolutely love chess as well. Great music and story line. I have the royal albert hall concert cd on my ipod and I listen to it a lot. For some reason I absolutely love the song "The soviet machine". It is one of the most addictive songs ever.

For me, it's probably The Deal. Such a lot of concentrated win. Also Diplomats and Arbiter, the former of which I did in musical theatre class at my acting summer school many years ago :D
Danish Tour Cast is my preferred recording for completeness and cast. Not quite so 80s but eh, Zubin Varla's existence makes up for that <3
It's probably the musical I most want to direct actually, even more than Les Mis.

Also I adore adore *adore* Someone Else's Story. That right there is my breakup song.
Seriously, if a guy ditches me, you can bet any money I'll be watching First Wives Club and sobbing to Someone Else's Story.

I did it for an audition song a while ago. It is gorgeous. It's one of those brilliant alto ballads, similar to one my own and I dreamed a dream but less overdone.

It's my go to song as well! Not that I've had to sing for anything for ages and ages. Yay, great minds! :D (though if you ever audition against me, expect me to send your estranged wife and former opponent to put you off your game and stuff)

I would expect nothing less... but then my ex-arch-rival will come and tell me your weaknesses and I'll win anyway ;)

But you'll cave and give me the part after you're cast in it. ;)

No mention of "Nobody's Side"? Easily my favorite song in the show, especially when paired with the argument beforehand (not Freddy singing "Budapest is Rising", though...frakking stupid idea).
