Help!! Any volunteers who want to kill bots?

Postby Frédéric Dumont » Sat May 24, 2008 9:55 pm

I'm not complaining, mind you. I'm doing it.
BUT... They're getting out of hand. Today alone, I found like 60 alerts of new registrations in my account, and it's a bit hard to keep up.
So... can we appoint an additional spambot killer? Please? *puppy dog wearing Jacobin cap eyes*

It does get unbelievable. Holy crap. I had more than 50 spambot requests between when I logged out last night and when I logged in this afternoon. Might try and destroy a few before I log off this evening.

I'd be up for it, too.

If there were a way to let you all do it without Admin permissions, but as it is I've just reinstated Marianne's admin-ship to do the job.

I've kept the mod position closed because as it stands we don't need a mod, just someone to kill spambots. I really wish I could make them stop. I've been banning e-mail addresses as I can but that doesn't help.

Also, I've made a few tiny changes to the forum (setting up robots.txt and changing the phpBB copyright line at the bottom to an image), which should decrease spam traffic. I hope.

A lot of the spam registrations were coming from a few specific domains that are owned by spammers and have no legit traffic, so I feel no compunction about blocking them. Hopefully that will also decrease the number of bots.
