Ever been intrigued by Havvy's avatar of noted prettyboy Enjy Stephen R. Buntrock? Fascinated by ideas of what Peter Lockyer was like as a Marius rather than a Valjean?

Thank you so much for posting this, Acaila! I'm not a big fan of Lockyer's Valjean (well honestly I've only watched...maybe a bootleg of BHH? Can't remember what it was that brought me to that conclusion) but he was an amazing Marius. The look in his eyes when Éponine died just broke my heart. *adds to favorite Marius list*

Don't know if he has played the role yet but I want to see that Enjolras as Marius. Really like his voice. :D

Sadly, you won't see Buntrock play Marius. He's a little long in tooth for it now, but he did put in a rather wonderful understudy tenure as Raoul in Phantom, which is ssoooort of similar.**

**Not really similar at all but, hey, romantic lead.

What I'd really like to see is a video of Hiromi Iwasaki (岩崎宏美) in performance as Fantine. She's a famous Japanese singer, and a mainstay of the Japanese Les Mis scene. However, she's managed to miss out on every cast album despite the multitude produced in Japan. Her husband, Takuya Kon, who isn't anywhere near as famous as her, manages to cadge a credit as Javert in one of the 2003 recordings, but not the OJC Fantine. And according to The Complete Les Misérables, she was extremely highly rated. What makes it even more of a tease is this clip on youtube of Minako Honda (本田美奈子) as Éponine from one of the late 1990s productions. And Minako as Éponine means Hiromi as Fantine, but unfortunately there are no clips of Hiromi as Fantine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOfeqwjpUgo

A taster of Hiromi as Fantine are her performances of I Dreamed a Dream in concert. Here's a performance from 1987.

Ooh, that's a really awesome find! I've been looking for stuff from the early performances in Japan for a while, but sadly without much success. Looking at the video of "I Dreamed a Dream" (as well as the 1987 cast album that just included "On My Own" and DYHTPS from the original Japanese cast), it's interesting to look at how different the lyrics were in some cases compared to the more complete albums from 1994 and 2003.

In any case, though, thank you for sharing!

There's a performance of Do You Hear the People Sing on a music show from 1987, by a Les Mis ensemble headed by Yuki Saito (Cosette) and Kaho Shimada (Éponine), but that clip has been taken down. Instead, here's Yuki Saito meeting Rebecca Caine.

Not youtube, but here's Yuki rehearsing AHFOL in December 1986. The segment is 2:20 in.

And here a re a couple of adverts for Les Mis, the first with Yuki Saito from 1987, the second with Kaho Shimada from 1988.

Here is that music show clip I mentioned. The segment is 12:40 in. Kaho Shimada (島田歌穂) sings the main line, Yuki Saito (斉藤由貴) the higher line. Incidentally, that's Goro Noguchi (野口五郎) at 2:58, who played Marius in 1987-91, another of the OJC warhorses who doesn't appear on any of the cast albums, unless his voice is on the 1987 recording of Do You Hear the People Sing.

Another video, and it's not from any Les Mis performances, but it's the only clip I've seen of Hiromi Iwasaki (OJC Fantine) and Kaho Shimada (OJC Éponine). Stick Sakae Takita between them and you'd have the Finale. They're singing Dancing Queen. Hiromi is in black, Kaho in red, and it looks like it's from the mid-late 1990s.

Incidentally, here's a review of the last hurrah of the classic Japanese cast in 2011. They'd finished their regular run in 2001, but were trotted out again every year 2004-2011 for short "Special Cast" runs lasting a week or so until their last appearance together in 2011, which also marked the last outing of the classic staging. Hiromi, Kaho and Takeshi Kaga, the three mainstays of the Japanese cast, are the best performers, but there's also a surprise appearance by Ran Otori, reprising her role as Madame Thenardier for the first time since 1987.

Les Mis in Hungarian: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SO30uwZ ... 41&index=2

Jump to the end of this video (ODM) and look at Javert!

The Hungarian cast was actually the first full show video I watched. Yes, I watched Les Mis in a language I didn't understand and at a time when I didn't have any idea how the stage version of Les Mis is supposed to be. Actually I got that video in hope of seeing the famous "2460!@#*&#$*#%@...." but sadly it didn't appear. And I watched it again yesterday. All I can say is...it's kind of hilarious.

I don't know if this has been posted before...West End Live 2013: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LOEfFuTixo
Geronimo Rauch!!!
I've been looking for his West End Valjean videos but without much success. I think I have a full show video of the same cast but Valjean is played by another guy. :( Btw, I don't like the Marius. And that Enjolras (forget his super long name...something like Alexander?) is much better in Elisabeth (he's my favorite Rudolf actually) and Tanz der Vampire but he's just not Enjolras. I like the Éponine a lot though. :D

I'm listening to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZoOpdM-Hi0 which is in French and audio only. I don't know French, but I get the feeling there's more to it in the original--that it's more poetic than the translation, which would figure. Also, this is a full 3 hours long. I hate to admit it in this company, but I'm not familiar enough with the musical to confidently identify the songs I'm hearing, although some are easy-- Rouge/Noir for instance.
Don't mess with Texas! We mess up enough by ourselves.
I have actually made bullets like they're doing in my avatar. Then loaded the gun with a ramrod, and shot it. But I'm not feeling real good about guns right now (10-3-17)

CC - you know how to fix that ;) Though even songs that share the same tune with the English version are quite different, e.g. La Misere becoming On My Own, and obviously a lot of songs in the show now didn't exist then.

Marius there is Rob Houchen. I was hoping when I saw the date it would be Jamie Ward, his predecessor who I absolutely loved. Rob is ok, but nothing special. Enjy is Anton Zetterholm.
I don't think there is a full video of Gero in London. I know there are highlights, and another one, but I think the other one is just highlights too. Need to get my hard drive connected up to check further. It's annoying that the full video of the first 2013 cast has got an understudy for Valjean, because it's got Tam as Javert, Chris Jacobsen as Enjy and Jamie Ward as Marius, so is otherwise pretty darn perfect.

You're correct about this in a way. The Gavroche song which later became "Little People" was taken directly from Hugo's text. This is also the reason why OFC Gavroche is my favorite. He was the only boy who got to sing what Gavroche really sings in the brick! :D Also I think it is the only production where Gillenormand makes an appearance.

It's quite different from the "standard" Les Mis today (i.e. OBC onwards). There were songs that didn't make it into subsequent productions. Also some songs (In my life, ODM, etc) were rearranged later. If you're interested in a more recent French production you can try 1991 Paris Revival. It's closer to the English version we know.

And cast-wise, I really love OFC Marius and Éponine. They're among my favorites in respective roles.

To tell the truth Rob sometimes reminds me of Nick Jonas. No idea why but it's definitely not a good thing.
Apparently, your "Alexander Enjolras" idea made me incapable of spelling any male name except Alexander, Acaila! But at least I got the initial correct. Now I remember this Anton guy is also Fiyero in Wicked Oberhausen...God look at the roles he's played. He'd be better as Marius really.
Really sad to hear that there's no English full show video of Geronimo. I can foresee that when I feel like fangirling him I'll just play the Madrid revival countless times (with the excuse of practicing Spanish).

*EDIT* Oh...is the one with Tam the only full video of the 2013 cast? If that's true then what I watched might not be the 2013 cast. I'm pretty sure Valjean is NOT Geronimo and Javert is NOT Tam but Marius is Rob and Enjolras is Anton. The Fantine seems to be Asian. She, Marius and Enjolras all have an accent which once made me wonder how many non-native speakers there were in that cast, lol.
