Les Mis Purity Quiz

Postby Acaila » Tue Jun 18, 2013 10:33 pm

So, there was a discussion in the Musain earlier about “how do you measure love of Les Mis?” Now, I don’t know about you, but that sounded like a recipe for a purity test type quiz if ever there was one!

This is not intended as a Mis-themed copulative organ measuring contest. Nobody is going to get full marks on this, because there is always more to explore. That’s the wonderful thing about our obsession of choice. This is a bit of fun, a way of finding out more about your fellow posters and hopefully a bit of inspiration for all of us going forward in our exploration of Les Mis. See something you don't know about? Why not go and look it up? :)

Go through the questions giving Yes/No answers. Be honest! Elaborations very welcome for interest, but only a full Yes counts for the actual score purposes. A “No, but” will not get you a point. There are some extra credit questions at the end.

I'm not even going to admit what my score is, only that my number of 'no' answers is under 20.

Do you own or have access to all of the translations? Yes
Have you read the book in the original French? Not in its entirety yet.
Have you ever read Cosette or another spinoff? Yes
Do you laugh at the sight of pears? No. I don't like this question. I laugh at people who are openly dressed as pears for the sake of political statement, but not just, y'know, pears.
Can you remember at least three words of argot? Yes, but I assume listing them here would defeat the purpose of this being a test?
Do you cry at the book? Yes, but not necessarily where I cry during the musical.
Have you ever tried to explain a Hugolian pun to someone who’s never read the Brick? Yes.
Do you quote favourite lines from the Brick in French by default? Yes, depending on the line.

Can you identify the difference between translations without looking up the translator? Yes, and I made a big fancy post all about it so no one should be able to say no to this question.
Do you have strong opinions on the difference between translations? Uh, strong opinions in as far as I'd rather read my F/M than like Hapgood. So yes.
Have you read the apocrypha of draft material that didn't make it to the final novel? Yes.
Do you know which translation has an extra barricade boy survive? Haha, yes. Now I do.
Can you name the real life inspirations for five or more characters? Yes, immediately off the top of my head: Myriel, Enjolras, Javert, Valjean and Marius.
Have you read another Hugo novel? Yes.
Have you read another Hugo novel that isn’t Notre-Dame de Paris? Yes.

Musical
Have you seen the musical on stage? Yes.
Have you seen a professional production of the musical on stage? Yes. And since I don't count shitty school productions as having seen the musical on stage, I feel the previous question was redundant. ;)

Can you sing an entire song from the Original French version in French? Yes. I can sing the entire musical in French.
Have you seen live or purchased a recording of another B&S musical because of Les Mis? Yes. Ish. I'm sure I would have seen Miss Saigon regardless, but I think Martin Guerre was specifically because of B&S.

Films

Have you seen the musical movie (2012/2013)? UGH, BOKE. (Yes)

Brick – Find the Abaisse post that contains your most in-depth and insightful analysis of the Brick and link to it. Score out of 5 points. Literally of THE BRICK? http://www.abaisse.the-barricade.net/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=2219
Musical - Choose your favourite main character. Rank your top five performers in the role, giving reasons for each. Score out of 5 points. For the musical, I'll go with Enjolras. 1 - Anthony Warlow. The CSR was my first recording and it's always been my go-to standard for Enjolras. All you have to do is listen to the way Warlow talks about the role; the way Enjolras can silently stand there and wait for a moment, knowing that the boys will clue in and listen to him, no shouting involved, to know that he gets it. 2 - Stephen R Buntrock. He was one of the first Enjolrati I saw, and the first I saw on Broadway. He's gorgeous and a little softer, but in the way that he knows like Warlow he doesn't need to shout to be heard. 3 - David Bardsley. He's not even remotely Enjolraic. He's Combeferre who woke up one morning and said to himself, oh shit, Enjolras is sick, I'd better lead this thing. And that translates to "oh my god, I love him" on my end. 4 - At this point we run out of my direct favorites. I don't need five, I have three perfectly good ones. So I'll give honorable mention in fourth place to Jeremy Hays, for being terrifying and excellent. And 5 - David Thaxton, who was really quite excellent in the acting department, even if I think the hugs in Drink With Me overdo it.
Film – Pick a film adaptation of your choice and name the five greatest crimes against Hugo committed in it. Score out of 5 points. The '88 is the easiest here. 1 - No Éponine. Which is like, whatever, except that then you lose an important element of the Marius/Cosette/Éponine love triangle, specifically the Éponine part, and the whole idea of role reversal and the selflessness, etc. 2 - Uma Thurman and Claire Danes. They're gross. This is a crime. 3 - The obvious attempt to make it look like Valjean and Fantine were developing a romantic relationship. This was not the point Hugo was trying to make, fuck off. 4 - Marius leading the revolution. Marius is not intended thematically to lead the revolution, congratulations on bastardizing Marius' character and also the Amis. 5 - Javert killing himself in front of Valjean. Woah, guilt trip and a half. Also, getting a little exhibitionist there, Snookums, entcha?
Fandom – Summarise what you think are the five biggest contributions to Les Mis fandom you have made. Score out of 5 points I don't make contributions. 1 - I tried to teach people about translations, 2 - I tried to bring paragraph role-playing back to the Abaisse boards, but that failed so I guess it dun count, 3 - I brought Bahorel back into vogue here on Abaisse, 4 - I'm currently working on an informative post about Broadway Enjolrati, I promise, you'll learn a lot. 5 - There is no five, I'm a lazy slouch who doesn't contribute shit all to anything.
Obsession – Tell us the most embarrassingly nerdy story of your Les Mis obsession. Score out of 5 points. Joe Spieldenner had to hold me up by the arm because being in his presence at the stage door nearly rendered me horizontal. And one time when I was like 12, I reenacted Gavroche's death scene on a big snow bank in the school playground and did it so well that one of the cute boys in my class had to come over and ask me if I was alright because everyone was so horrified that I'd legitimately hurt myself. Nerdy because then I had to explain that I was okay. And what I was doing. Derp.

Too sleepy to go post hunting

Musical - Javert
1 - Quast - The icon! Gorgeous tone of voice, perfectly pitched mixture of utter belief and focus and humanity, exceptionally well thought through performance that picks up on so much detail and nuance and uses every single sign system under his command to convey it.
2 - McCarthy - intensity, well sung, similar style to Quast and very iconic for me since I saw him as Javert for half the times I've seen the show
3 - Sarich - because even though he was a total miscast, I thought his youth brought a really nice zealous dimension to the role and I utterly utterly adore his Soliloquy
4 - Mutu - new entry!! I loved his physicality and his sass and couldn't really criticise anything about his portrayal
5 - The new entry above has caused some debate, but for the sake of going more obscure I'll pick Peter Corry who made me fall in love with the character in the first place. He was the one who, from the start, made me empathise with Javert as the misunderstood logical man trying to do the right thing.

Film
Yeah, the 98
1- Valjean witnessing Javert's death and then lumbering off all happy
2 - Javert's death being so utterly crappy
3 - Valjean hitting Cossette
4 - Enjolras surrendering
5 - Marius not being Marius. Or Enjolras. Or anyone recognisable :?

Fandom
Hmmm. Presents of awesome things? Most recently the making of awesome things? Obscure youtube videos of things relating to the show? Flaily knowledge about a few West Endjolrati?

Obsession
Probably the time I dressed up in tricolor belt sash thing and wandered around our hotel in Paris singing DYHTPS. That was at least more public than the time I sobbed my guts out in a taxi after being hugged and kissed on the cheek by my favourite Enjolras

That means she scored ridiculously well, Em. Not that she failed it. Hell, she's ON the quiz as requisite reading.

Yes.

Do you wear an item of official Les Mis merchandise in public?

Can you hold a conversation in French?

Can we talk about the weather? Because in that case, yes, if we're discussing politics I imagine my responses would be "Quoi?" and "Je ne comprende pas."

Yes. Annoyingly loud DYHTPS is awful to wake up to.

Do you have particular habits that govern the way you appreciate Les Mis? (e.g. never listening to the finale outside a theatre, reading in a certain order)

Final Battle can only be heard in a theatre for me. And Orestes and Pylades in the movie can't be watched unless I'm in a theatre. It's not the same otherwise.

Is your career/major influenced by your love of Les Mis?

No.

When faced with a difficult decision or situation, do you determine your best course of action by thinking "what would [character] do?"

What would Valjean do, I ask myself when trying to do something sneaky. And then I do the opposite.

Do you have a crush on a character in Les Mis despite their fictional nature?

Yes.

Do you consider an appreciation of Les Mis to be an essential thing in a significant other?

No.

Do you have a Les Mis themed tattoo?

I'll do bonus later. I'm tired. I did OK on Brick, crap on musical and crap on movies.

Brick – Find the Abaisse post that contains your most indepth and insightful analysis of the Brick and link to it. Score out of 5 points.
Looking back on my abaisse posts I can't say that I've posted anything too insightful. Considering my answer to the question of "what was the lasting legacy of the french revolution?" was "Sydney Carton", I think I'm not at my most insightful on this forum.

Musical - Choose your favourite main character. Rank your top five performers in the role, giving reasons for each. Score out of 5 points.
Ok, I'm going to go for Javert here, just because I think I can give good reasons.
Philip Quast- he is Javert (do not forget his name, do not forget him). He looks and sounds perfect as Javert. And most everyone agrees on it
Michael McCarthy- Often classed as the best not-Quast. I had the privilege of hearing this man twice on stage as Javert... and not knowing it, and then realising that I had not only seen him in 2005 but he had been the Javert in Dublin '93 when my parents saw the show before I was born. I nearly had a heart attack when I realised that
Roger Allam- Roger Allam can do no wrong in my eyes. His Javert is not to everyone's liking but I enjoy his calm, cool sarcasticness
Earl Carpenter- I saw Earl as the Phantom and from what I have seen of his Javert, I am very impressed. He has wonderful stage presence and I love his voice too.
Hadley Fraser- Angry!Javert. This is probably my longest post without talking about my darling Hadders. Enough said.

Film – Pick a film adaptation of your choice and name the five greatest crimes against Hugo committed in it. Score out of 5 points.
Depardieu/Malkovitch Edition
1. No fall of the barricade scene
2. Courfeyjolras
3. The "I love Cosette" scene
4. Éponine trying to bargain with Marius (that scene went way too far)
5. Lack of characterisation of Barricade boys (it was a serial, it had the time)

Fandom – Summarise what you think are the five biggest contributions to Les Mis fandom you have made. Score out of 5 points
1. Founded (les mis extended musical) on this forum. We need to work on that again.
2. Been pacifist in some shipping wars
Not sure that I've really done much else.

Obsession – Tell us the most embarrassingly nerdy story of your Les Mis obsession. Score out of 5 points.
I think my life is just general Les Mis obession, I'm not sure there's anything particular. Unless you count my best friend's birthday where, wearing my Enjolras jacket, I decided to start ranting about social injustice. My friend now calls me Enjolras

As Acaila has said before, Em, it's not really about passing or failing, so much as gauging where your fandomy interests lie and getting to know more about other people on the board. If you truly feel like you've failed in the sense that you need to do more things that would gain you yes answers, then you've got a pretty good check list in front of you of what you can do. There's a wealth of knowledge here on the boards and a wealth of knowledgeable people. All you gotta do is ask. Or use the Abaisse search engine effectively.
