Re: Poll: Favourite English language recording?

Oh don't even get me started on the 25AT production and the weird-ass direction that seems to have become standard in many cases, going so far as to export it to the US tour. So much angrybelting. So much. And tempos that make it sound like the show's being conducted by a squirrel on meth. One thing...

Re: Poll: Favourite English language recording?

I'm mostly with Acaila here--the TAC has the most solid all-around cast, no doubt about it, but the London recording is sublime when it's on form. The OBC is... unimpressive. But complete or not, the flatness and disjointedness of the CSR are just too damn irritating for me to like it. The 25AC is a...

Re: Character Lineage Headcanons

I actually have a fairly involved backstory for Enjolras' parents--mom was from a minor offshoot of a noble family, dad was a Napoleonic soldier. Her family were émigrés who fled to the Austrian Empire during the Revolution, not that that prevented their sixteen-year-old daughter from eloping with a...

Re: Les Amis: Ages and Religions

I don't know why, but I always thought Enjolras was an atheist... I think it's because I see, I do not know where, something that says that republican were atheist... Or maybe it was my brother, who is an republican atheist... I don't know... :D I know that at this period, in France, about everyone...

Re: Greek Mythology

Is this a bad time to confess that three-quarters of my knowledge of Greek mythology comes from repeatedly mainlining D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths as a kid? (And a lot of the rest comes from the Metamorphoses . Or Google.) A hefty chunk of the meta I've written on Tumblr wouldn't even exist if I ...

Re: The Crusade Against Elitism

"Elitism" implies that the people who are trying to force their interpretations on other people are elite in any way, when in fact most of them can barely string two coherent thoughts together. Their entire stance seems to be "I'm right because I'm right and if you question this you'r...

Re: Thenardier as Napoleon III

Oh man, this is great . Hugo's hateboner for the Second Empire strikes again. It's been remarked before that the Thénardiers are the only intact nuclear family in the novel, and it might have to do with wider social and legal trends over the course of the July Monarchy and Second Empire that consoli...

Re: Time to for another adaptation?

BBC miniseries: *_____* Yes please

I think the 2012 movie might actually be the most faithful English-language adaptation I'm aware of--most of the other ones that stick close to the source material are French.

Re: Pet Peeves?

Yeah, Fantine's songs have always been the ones I associate most with being tear-jerkers. Hathaway's IDAD blew me away, but I'm pretty sure I'm too sleep-deprived to articulate the things I loved about it. I think "humanity in the midst of dehumanization" might be a good start? IDK, but th...

Nice!

Here's someone else who's tried a similar project: http://mdn.chanvrerie.net/barbican-prev ... 73116.html Might be interesting to compare and contrast.

Re: Les Mis Purity Quiz

Acaila: the "Christmas only with more death" quote? That's loosely plagiarized from the Miserable Diaries, I think--and I forget who first applied it to Thaxton. Might've been duva back in DT's understudy days. In any case, quote away! And no need for attribution, since that's so tangled-up.

Okay, fine. Cripes, this is gonna be embarrassing. Brick Have you read the unabridged book? Yes Have you read more than one translation of the book? Yes Do you have a self-annotated copy of the book? Yes--surprisingly few notes scribbled in the margins, but an unholy number of tape flags. Do you own...

I'm not even going to admit what my score is, only that my number of 'no' answers is under 20.

Re: Appreciating Each Other

Just wanna say, I've been recognized several times at the Les Mis stage door by People From The Internet--mostly by people who lurked on Abaissé/musicals.net/my LiveJournal, but a couple of times by people I actually knew. And once it was a fellow Abaissé denizen who I had NO IDEA I might run into ...
