Re: 2nd UK Tour, 1997-2000

It's most remember now probably because the Dublin stop only was supposed to be the last time Colm performed the lead - until he got convinced to do Shanghai in 2002. The cast at that time was: Valjean: Colm Wilkinson, Javert: Peter Corry Fantine: Carmen Cusack Mme T:Anita Reeves Thenardier: John Ka...

Re: 19C photos of old Paris (pre-Haussmann)

Sweet. I keep telling myself no, I don't need the exhibition catalogue, and maybe this will continue to keep me from buying it. (It was a really nice exhibition at the National Gallery and now at the Met. With a nice catalogue. That I don't need to spend money on. But still kinda covet. Because who ...

Re: Which sountrack?

I know I'm old school, but TAC. Terry somehow keeps originating roles that are taken over by rich baritones, when that isn't his voice, and I like all his replacements better. I think you'd be v. disappointed in his Stars. And while I like the OLC, it is somewhat different and the Stars orchestratio...

Re: The New Broadway Revival - Starting March 2014

Oh, it's just the excuse that they're giving her. Ben Davis was told his voice was "too operatic" when he was fired. Management comes up with really terrible excuses because they don't have good ones. If she were fired for cause, she wouldn't be posting on Facebook about their weird excuse...

Re: The New Broadway Revival - Starting March 2014

Because she's "too young" in comparison to Marius (27) and Éponine (over 30). Which totally makes sense since they were all hired at the same time and everyone knew the whole time Charlotte was 20 and things have changed so much since first rehearsal got everyone in the same room. In other...

I just want to say I am so jealous of you guys. Had intended to get over there in time to catch it, but life happened. I love Menier so much, and I adore Candide.

Re: So, Let’s Talk About Translations

Oh, good! I've always preferred Penguin for my classics, and I always felt that the Denny was a weird misstep for them. Glad to hear that the Donougher restores their position.

Because Susan is awesome :) Gotta love the old Broadway crew.

(how was it 15 years ago they were all working together?)

Re: Shows that you hate yourself for missing

Oh, lord, a very long list. Let's just say that I was living in London when Sam West was doing Hamlet and I didn't go because I didn't know at the time that it was worth waiting for standing room and I'd kick myself for the rest of my life since at the time, I didn't know who he was. *headdesk* I ke...

Once you understand that this book is in large part about Victor Hugo, some of the random stuff suddenly makes so much more sense :)

Re: Ramin's Valjean with long, dirty hair or near-shaved?

I feel bad for Ramin in particular. Can you imagine having to go through your real life with that beard when you're of Middle Eastern descent? The close-cropped hair in addition adds to the possible "and the mosque is just down the street" vibe. One almost has to dress like a full-on hipst...

Re: Les Mis Gone Wrong

The bullet bag has never needed to actually make it - it misses as often as it goes over, in my experience. (You try throwing a bag full of lead to a great height when you're dying - it should be hard!) Since it works both ways narratively, more effort is put into the singing and acting than the thr...

Re: Appreciating Charles Dickens

Bleak House! One of my favourites. It has everything: romance of varying sorts, a mystery, a look at the highest and lowest classes, and gay. (Sergeant George/Phil is canon and I won't hear different.)

Re: 2.7 Parenthèse/A Parenthesis 9/1/11 - 16/1/11

You're not wrong. I was a poli sci major and got my masters in European and Eurasian studies, focusing on EU political economy, and in fandom terms, I've ended up mostly doing class and regional studies (probably derived partly from the copious amounts of nationalism theory I did in undergrad and gr...

Re: West End Cast - 2013/2014

Now you better understand us old people who only knew the traditional staging for so many years :) It's not necessary, but it's tremendously effective.
