Re: 19C photos of old Paris (pre-Haussmann)

There are now 500-odd of Marville's photographs of old Paris up on my website: http://chanvrerie.net/paris/

Re: A thought about dreaded pairings

Just to point out, if you read the whole of this thread, it hasn't really been a "put all the ships you hate" place. If we get too into ship-shaming, we're probably going to end up being no better than tumblr, and I know how so many of you pride yourself that we are above that sort of fig...

Re: Favourite Slash Pairing?

The concentrated magnificence of Ten/Simm is like the (fic/plotbunny/headcanon) gift that keeps on giving, though. :D And Three/Delgado is a funny thing--whenever they're interacting, or whenever Roger Delgado is on screen really, it's pure gold, but otherwise it's just one of those eras of Who I ha...

Re: Favourite Slash Pairing?

Heh heh heh, I was mostly joking. Although I'm a bit more apathetic about Five/Ainley than I am about Ten/Simm or Three/Delgado--what can I say, I like 'em as matched sets.

Re: Favourite Slash Pairing?

*headtilt* By "slash" do we mean "blatantly non-canon" or "gay"?

Acaila: Are we gonna have to get in a cagematch over Five/Ainley vs Ten/Simm?

Re: Songs that make you think of characters?

I realized the other day that if I had to make a fanmix for Éponine it would just be wall-to-wall Emilie Autumn songs. I couldn't be your friend My world was too unstable You might have seen the end But you were never able To keep me breathing As the water rises up again Before I slip away... Doubt ...

Re: The Rant thread

All I wanted to do was back up the kinkmeme, I swear to God, and now here I am at 5:30am STILL SWEARING AT LIVEJOURNAL and their dodgy, ill-documented, difficult-to-work-with codebase for increasingly arcane reasons as all the easy avenues get shut off: - LJ's own backup utility doesn't do comments,...

Re: Do you have a OTP?

Enjolras/Grantaire is the one I always come back to, but more for the friction and tension between them; it's tough to sell me on any fic that has those two in a functional relationship. Not impossible, but damn, it's hard enough to capture their dynamic already without trying to develop it into som...

Re: DISCUSSION: The E&R relationship

I'm not sure Grantaire is consciously aware of wanting anything from Enjolras at all; he admires him, and feels like he "becomes someone once more" when he's around him, but he seems mostly content to just let Enjolras... be Enjolras. Except, yeah, deep down he does want Enjolras' acceptan...

Re: DISCUSSION: The E&R relationship

Hugo goes to a lot of trouble at the beginning to show us that Enjolras... well, at least acts like he doesn't have a heart, because he acts according to his ideals and his ideals are still quite austere: he doesn't care that Rousseau packed off his own children to an orphanage, he could watch a wid...

Re: DISCUSSION: The E&R relationship

Actually--and this might in itself be an unpopular opinion--I think that not only is Grantaire drawn to Enjolras as a person rather than an idea, Hugo is trying to tell us this right-out. "How did Enjolras enthral him? By his ideas? No. By his character. [...] Without his being clearly aware of...

Re: DISCUSSION: The E&R relationship

You don't have to read Grantaire as being in love with Enjolras if you don't want to, it's a valid interpretation either way--but no, actively denying that Grantaire's ~feelings about Enjolras could be anything but platonic is not "a point most of us will agree on."

Re: Poll: Favourite English language recording?

Okay, clarification: it brings back the full force of what I've heard in the theater with professional sound quality. Amateur live recordings can have astonishingly good sound, but most of the time they're not gonna capture that bass much better than the studio recordings--either they're too f...
