Re: Language learning

I'm in Montreal too! Some people are rude to me (I'm from Ontario). It's difficult because some of the resentment is justified as francophones were treated pretty badly through much of Canadian history, but it doesn't make Quebec feel any less unwelcoming.

Anna Karenina

Obviously a huge novel with a ton to discuss, most of which I loved, but was I the only one who found Levin’s ending so totally unsatisfying? It felt like Tolstoy really understood and accurately portrayed his depression, his suicidality, how there wasn’t really anything wrong but he still just didn...

Re: Alexander Dumas père

Love 3 Musketeers. D’Artagnan is hilarious. He can’t go ten pages without dueling someone. Also, not really a major spoiler but the scene in Count of Monte Cristo where that guy does that thing with the water and the knife is just so awesome that epic music started playing in my head. Dumas is so mu...

Re: What Les Mis Character are you? quiz

It’s interesting how the result changes as you age and change. I got Grantaire a lot maybe five years ago. I doubt I’d get him now as cynicism was our main shared trait. I’m not really much of a cynic these days because I’m not fourteen and angry at the world anymore. I really don’t know who I’d be ...

Re: Language learning

I live in Quebec now and my French still sucks. It’s hard because they’ll try to make your life easier by switching to English, which is very kind but also makes it difficult to practice. I did Latin in high school and am doing it again now. Apparently French is too much but I’ll take a dead languag...

Re: Criticism

Hugo was a wonderful writer and the long passages are very informative and the way novels are written has changed. That being said, I think you could cut down the sewer or Waterloo or convent sections significantly and not lose a whole lot. It drags, it makes the pacing weird, and I think Hugo could...

Re: Le Cafe Mu(in)sain

I think I’ve reached the part of your late teens/early twenties where it feels like everything is falling apart around you and all attempts to fix it backfire and make it worse. Solid 2/10. Not enjoying it. I’ve been watching a lot of Buffy and comforting myself with the fact that my teen angst crap...

Haven't seen or heard DEH, but I once heard it described as "a poor man's Next to Normal".

Re: Political Posts

Currently it seems somebody has taken advantage of the blue collar workers and used it to ride to the top. I assume we're talking about Trump? I agree that they've been taken advantage of, but I think you really need to address the root causes. Why do half of all Americans feel like it's acceptable...

Re: Political Posts

I will make the argument that there are some things you just can't compromise on. Always seeking a compromise makes the assumption that both sides are equally legitimate which I really don't think is true in every case. If you have one side insisting the earth is flat and one insisting the earth is ...

Re: Political Posts

I totally agree, Acaila!!! Of course total polarization with no centrists is bad, but you need the fringes (I will argue more the left than the right) to push for any meaningful change.

Re: Political Posts

They can be kicked out if they commit a crime and maybe if the Senate votes them out (we're not sure -- it's never happened). Yeah, the lack of accountability is what a lot of people hate about them.
