Re: 1776

From all I've heard it's incredibly accurate to the show, with only a few minor cuts and tweaks here and there (though that also depends which version you watch- the original theatrical version cut "Cool, Considerate Men", which was restored for home releases, and the laserdisc release inc...

Re: Le Cafe Mu(in)sain

Would it be sacrilege to say I'm finding it hard to care much about the Broadway principles after hearing them? I like Kyle and Sam, but that's about it. :/ I'm in the same boat, though Ramin's Valjean has grown on me a lot. Can't stand James or Mientus, Saunders' Thenardier is actively annoying, S...

Re: Le Cafe Mu(in)sain

Yeah, definitely will- plan is sometime next week, and I'm still asking around seeing what day works best for people. You can throw your two cents into the mix as well, that'd be helpful.

Re: Le Cafe Mu(in)sain

Hey, if anyone's interested, I'm hosting a livestream in about a half-hour of the 1990 Long Beach production of Chess with Jodi Benson. Y'all should come if you're interested.

Re: Stephen Sondheim!

apparently they don't need or value artistic integrity, so why not. Given that just a couple years ago Sondheim talked Arthur Laurents out of a Gypsy remake because there was no valid artistic reason to do it, I doubt that's the case. I do get the sense of disinterest here, though- it'd be interest...

Re: Soft spots for short-running or unliked musicals?

I thought that was the intent of the song lyrically, not just with the staging- that it's about all four assassinations and not just Kennedy. How I always interpreted it, at any rate. For myself, I do like the song and agree it should be kept in the show...but I much prefer the musical transition in...

Re: Soft spots for short-running or unliked musicals?

That's what I've heard re: Merrily- they did a big revision of it back in the 90s which is what I think everyone uses now. I'm not really familiar with it myself though I do have the Encores! cast recording (really should give it a full listen sometime soon).

Re: Soft spots for short-running or unliked musicals?

No, Bounce is Road Show and Wise Guys - but yeah, it's another problem show (as you would expect from a show with three different names). Merrily We Roll Along was probably the biggest flop, though- only ran for 16 performances (and 52 previews!) and was absolutely trashed ( Anyone Can Whistle had a...

Re: Soft spots for short-running or unliked musicals?

Another one I adore is Stephen Sondheim's Assassins. Like many of his shows, it had a rather short run on Broadway but got lots of critical praise. Even many Sondheim fans seem to think of it as a "problem show," but it's possibly my second favorite of his shows after Sweeney Todd. Do the...

Watching the Tony's right now, 1 for 2 for predictions so far. We'll see how I do by the end.

Re: Musical Movie?

I actually found the opposite effect was true for the Amis in the film for me- after seeing it the first time I couldn't pick a single one of them apart (I could barely even remember which one was Grantaire), and it wasn't until barrages of gifs that I even started to be able to really distinguish a...

Re: Shows that you hate yourself for missing

I don't hate myself for missing this one, but I am monumentally disappointed in my HS drama teacher for it. See, every year in my drama program, students that got into one or more of the 4 core groups of the program got to go on an annual weekend trip to New York, where they participated in a number...

Re: Any Doctor Who fans here?

Russell T. Davies on the Rani: If I’d brought back the Rani it would have been Ruthie Henshall, because she is just glorious – she’s showbiz and she’s got that West End flair to her but she’s a properly good actor. She knows genre. She’s someone who comes in and just delivers a villain that’s absolu...

Re: Any Doctor Who fans here?

Eccleston is my favourite NuWho Doctor and I flat out refuse to believe that the whole war-guilt thing has been mucked up. It hasn't, though- Eccleston/Tennant/early Smith still think they used the Moment, which is really what matters. From a character perspective nothing's actually changed ...

Re: Favourite foreign language versions of songs

I adore almost everything on the concept album (seriously one of my absolute favorite recordings), but specifically "L'Air de la Misere" (What became "On My Own"), "Mon Prince Est en Chemin" ("Castle on a Cloud"), "Donnez, Donnez" ("Look Down&qu...
