Re: The Rant thread

Best of luck in your exam, Aurelia! And I hope your allergy vanishes soon. I think it's the third week or so that I haven't had class because every hallway was barricaded by the students in an attempt to make the university more democratic. Insert a gratuitous joke on the "French tradition"...

Mae govannen to Abaissé, Elbereth. Tolkien is, and probably will be forever, one of my one true literary loves. The new Hobbit movie is going to be fantastic. Dwarves in barrels, Beorn, Mirkwood elves, giant spiders, and Smaug! And Thorin almost radically differing from his book persona for the sak...

Re: The Book

Marius and Gervais, you are amazing. That's excellent quality work. And you think me gentle! I don't think of myself this way - I see myself more as being "not unnecessarily unkind" than "gentle." But, seeing as you wonderful people have never given me a reason to be unkin...

Re: The Rant thread

Ugh. When will those blasted students learn that NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO POISON THEMSELVES WITH THEIR SMOKE? First, the building lacks proper ways of combating an eventual fire. Second, lousy way of killing themselves. Third, it stinks. Fourth, it's against the law (no excuse for this, there are signs...

Re: Annotating and Marking Your Books

My edition of the Brick is, and will remain, untouched (in the sense of dog-ears and annotations). It's 27 years older than I am, not in the best state of conservation. I have a bad habit of putting too much pressure when writing by hand, and writing with that much pressure could probably rip some o...

Re: Le Cafe Mu(in)sain

I'll be one of the insane ones in Camp NaNoWriMo trying to pull off a hundred thousand words in a month. 8) Eh, that sort of literary madness is easier if your style is a bit more flourished than it probably should be. Last year, I hit the 50k mark in November, and I wasn't even halfway through with...

Re: The Numbers Game: Who Am I? In other languages

@Trompe-la-Mort: A quick Google search says that the origin probably came from the bad quality of phone calls, in the beginning of the 20th century. It was common for people to mistake "três" for "seis" because of the similar sound, so, they adopted "meia" in place of &...

Re: The Numbers Game: Who Am I? In other languages

In the Brazilian production, his number is 23612 - "dois-três-seis-um-dois."

The number 24601 would kill the metric, I think, because it would be either "dois-quatro-seis-zero-um" or "dois-quatro-meia-zero-um."

Re: Le Cafe Mu(in)sain

Unfunny musical coincidences are the worst. To go to my classes or come back home from my classes, I can't avoid crossing a bridge over a river (well, there is a way, but it takes far too long for my tastes). And apparently my phone, which I use as my music player, has its timing good enough to matc...

Re: Le Cafe Mu(in)sain

Hello, Flynn! I'm Nick. It's a pleasure to see you around. Ian Holm's part is rather small, yes. But it's amusing to see Bilbo as a grumpy, greedy human. And I rather like Perkins as Javert. I just think they shouldn't have done that sound effect on his suicide scene (or, still in regards to that, t...

Re: Le Cafe Mu(in)sain

I personally blame Spongebob for my liking of the Drunken Sailor sea shanty, and the Drunken Sailor sea shanty for my liking of some songs. (That is, the songs I put on repeat for a few hours in a row without being bored or annoyed by them. I either like them a lot or have more patience than I think.)
