Re: Musical Movie Reviews/Discussion

I also feel the need to see it a second time. The cuttings didn't bother me much, mostly because I'm more familiar with the student edition. I'm satisfied that we got enough Brick details, though I'll have to see it again before I agree Les Amis need more screen time. (They probably do.) The barrica...

Re: If you were cast... who would you play?

Enjolras would be fun. I can hit all but a few of his notes (in the original range/key). The issue: I'm not a guy. Amen, sister. I would love to see a cross-cast Enjolras, even if I couldn't be one. But I was a factory worker when I did the student version and that was fun. I'd also love to be the ...

Re: Things I Am Not Allowed to do on the Barricades

I will not tell Javert to jump off a bridge. I will not mention Cosette's brief crush on Theodule to Marius. I will not tell Theodule Cosette still thinks he's hot. I will not urge Grantaire to stalk Enjolras. I will not smuggle men into the convent Petit-Picpus. I will not impersonate Petit-Gervais...

Re: Coincidences related to Les Mis

I was at Les Mis practice and Javert kept coming in early on this one line, and after they made him do it over the fifth time and he still came in wrong, he said, "I'm sorry! I'm gonna kill myself!" We all laughed because it was Javert.

Re: Les Amis as schoolteachers?

I'd love to write a fic about that. But no, I guess that as a political group, one of their main issues was free compulsory education for all. Not that they wanted to do so themselves. Still would be super entertaining if they did.

Re: Musical Movie?

Hugo said the barricade really was only about six feet tall. But they do have a good-sized one nonetheless. I can't wait to see it explode. But I could see them doing a quick wordless scene of the National Guard shooting Grantaire and Enjolras. And I like the imagery of Enjolras nailed to the wall b...

Les Amis as schoolteachers?

The Brick reads, "Ostensibly, the purpose of the ABC Society was the education of children." Did Les Amis set up a kind of school for the children of workers or were they merely advocating it? There are two headquarters for the ABC. Did the one which was "more accessible to factory la...

Re: Book!Javert: Evil or misguided? Please discuss.

I would say his adherence to his belief system is balanced; the system itself, however, is not. He takes eye-for-an-eye justice to an extreme and completely ignores the law of mercy. I wouldn't call it evil, but rather, dangerously misbalanced. However, I do find it amusing that it took Javert ten y...

Re: Musical Movie?

I'm actually really excited to see what they do for the barricades . . . I want to see it get blown up and I want to see a lot of one-on-one combat - stuff you can't just put onstage.

Re: Enjolras in Love???

Definitely more of a Combeferre/Jehan-type approach. If Enjolras really wanted to, he would be more bold.

Re: Les Misérables v Wicked

In terms of canon-adherence, Wicked is a far-fetched adaptation of a book that was a far-fetched adaptation of a movie which was an even more far-fetched adaptation of a book. Makes Les Mis a whole lot simpler.

Re: School Edition

There are two productions of the student version performing now in my area, and I'm confessedly in the better one. Our Gavroche has a kick-line of urchins, which I really don't mind and actually is somewhat canon, and it gives kids who were cut for Gavroche and young Éponine and Cosette a chance to ...

Re: If there were no Brick...

^ same here, though I've only read the book recently. I would say the musical definitely does the book justice. However, I didn't come to full obsession until after I had read the brick.
