Book that covers the 1950s film version

For some interesting coverage of the Jean Gabin adaptation, I recommend Susan Hayward, French Costume Drama of the 1950s (2010). It covers a number of other literary adaptations and historical films. I picked up a copy at the university bookshop.

Re: Bande Dessinée/Comic-book eds of Hugo

On Friday I got a BD of NDdP, publ. by Glénat, 2010. While it sticks pretty well to the story (still no cassock-ripping, though) I was somewhat bemused by the drawings (by Jean-Marie Michaud), especially the depictions of Claude and Pâquette. They are 10 years younger than I am – and while one would...

Re: The Good Karma Thread

I am now back in temp admin work again, at the university. Still nothing permanent, but this is better than nothing. I've been able to indulge my Hugo-fandom a bit, too, with a BD of NDdP, although some of the art work is annoying, and a commentary volume. I'm also tracking some of Vic's sources.

Re: The Rant thread

Got feedback from interview: as usual, the other person had "more relevant experience". Time after time, I apply for admin posts that are way below my level of qualifications, yet someone else is always "better" than me. I feel utterly worthless. I haven't had a regular job for 4...

Re: Notre-Dame de Paris adaptations

I've discovered the Dennis DeYoung HoND musical concept album: it's pretty good! I was also pleased by his comment about the show: And more than condensing, I always saw it as essentially Frollo's story and wanted to follow the arc of his character, and explore the kind of man who would adopt a defo...

Re: The Rant thread

Job interview went well yesterday (I thought), but I still got the rejection email. Sod it.

Still, went to see Il Gattopardo at the flicks today: one of my all-time favourites.

Re: Notre-Dame de Paris adaptations

From the 2010 Dresden production of the Schmidt opera: Esméralda à la Roxie Hart (Camilla Nylund)!

And more of the delectable Markus Butter, who played Claude in the production. (He has a very goofy, schoolboy grin!)

Re: What was the worst in the movies?

I've never encountered the '57 version in an English dub. It was shown on TV here with subtitles (I have a home recording of it from that, not great quality, and an un-subtitled DVD French DVD.) The trouble with the English-language versions (bar the Neeson one) is that Jean Valjean is physically mi...

Vic's on the Index auctorum et librorum prohibitorum

Unsurprising to find him there for being heretical and/or immoral, but extremely heartening: all the best French literature seems to be on it!

Thanks! I'm now back home in Glasgow, and had a few Hugo-related goodies from eBay waiting for me, so am very happy.

Re: The Good Karma Thread

Man, maybe we should find out who doesn't have anxiety problems, because there are so many of us who do... I don't. I sometimes feel downcast because of job rejections and worry about my economic future, but that's an entirely rational reaction to crappy circumstances. Having fun with friends or wr...

Re: The Good Karma Thread

Dad came out of hospital on Wednesday (just as well: coping with Mother was a major strain), and is doing fine (they 'rewired' him, to turn his defibrillator into a pacemaker as well), so we've been having a few pleasant days all reunited, and I can go home to Broadbandland on Monday.

Re: The Rant thread

Are you a member of the Museums Association? I don't know if it would be any use to you, but we have an institutional membership and get the magazine and jobs supplement I've been getting them for 15 years, thanks. The problem is experience. The voluntary work I've done counts for nothing: you need...

Re: The Rant thread

Hope his recovery goes as smoothly as it may from this point, Silverwhistle. My father has gone through a health rollarcoaster in recent years (quadruple bypass, fainting spells that lead to the discovery of his need for a pacemaker, and breaking his hip in a dramatic fall on my sister's marble flo...
